Casa Tropical unites contemporary architecture with the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica's dry forest. The design responds to the unique topographical situation: a gently sloping site with ocean views and direct access to pristine nature.
The client wished for a home that doesn't dominate the landscape but integrates into it. At the same time, every space should make the quality of the place tangible. Local building regulations required sensitive adaptation to the tropical climate.
The concept is based on two interlocking volumes: a closed, stone base that houses private areas, and a floating, open pavilion above. Terraces cascade toward the forest and create a flowing connection between inside and outside.
The construction combines exposed concrete with regional materials. The facade of local volcanic stone references traditional tropical construction. Floor-to-ceiling openings were realized as post-and-beam construction with minimal steel profiles, allowing for natural cross-ventilation.
